About Us
For over 75 years, the MNWB has been providing essential welfare support to seafarers, fishers and their dependants
The Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB), is a registered charity established by the UK government in 1948, evolving from the 'Seamen’s Welfare Board' post-Second World War.
Originally involved in aiding displaced seafarers, the MNWB has adapted to the changing landscape of the UK Merchant Navy, with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency now holding an 'observer' seat on the Council.
From our Southampton HQ, the Board serves as the overarching charity for the UK Merchant Navy & Fishing Fleets. Its Council of Management comprises an equal representation of trustees from ship owners, maritime trade unions, and voluntary organisations such as Mission to Seafarers, Stella Maris, and Fishermen’s Mission.
Collaborating with over 45 maritime member organisations, the Board offers a diverse range of services dedicated to supporting the welfare of seafarers and their dependents.
While the Board does not actively engage in fundraising, it leverages income from investments to empower charities in enhancing the lives of seafarers, fishers, and their dependents, regardless of nationality, religion, or ethnic background.
